Planning Your Greenville Wedding: A Photographer's Guide
Greenville and the Upstate of South Carolina have quietly become one of the loveliest places in the Southeast to marry. In a single afternoon you can go from a downtown rooftop to the blue haze of the mountains, and the light here, especially in spring and fall, is exactly the kind that makes photographs glow. If you are starting to dream up your day, here are the things I have learned matter most.
Start with the venue, because it sets the tone for everything else. Downtown Greenville gives you brick, string lights, and Falls Park just steps away. Head a little farther out and you will find garden estates, historic barns, and mountain views near Travelers Rest and beyond. Whatever you choose, think about where the sun sits in the late afternoon. A venue with open shade or a west-facing view will do half of the work for your photos before I ever lift my camera.
Once the venue is set, build a timeline with a little breathing room. The happiest wedding days I photograph are the ones that are not rushed. I always recommend protecting fifteen or twenty quiet minutes for portraits around golden hour, that stretch just before sunset when everything turns warm and soft. If you are open to a first look earlier in the day, it can calm the nerves and free up even more time to actually enjoy your reception.
Do not underestimate the getting-ready hours, either. Some of my favorite frames happen before the ceremony, a mother fastening a necklace, a note being read, the dress hanging in the morning light. Keeping those spaces relatively tidy and near a window gives those moments room to breathe.
Most of all, choose a photographer whose style already feels like you, and then trust them on the day. My approach is candid and natural: I would rather catch the real laugh than pose a perfect one. When you are relaxed and present with the people you love, the photographs take care of themselves, and years from now they will still feel honest.
